The death toll from the massive flash floods that swept through parts of Nepal has risen to 939, with authorities continuing recovery and search operations in the worst-hit areas. Nearly 4,000 people are still reported missing, officials said on Monday.
Rescue agencies have so far brought more than 10,000 people to safety. However, reaching several stranded communities remains difficult due to continuing rain, overflowing rivers and extensive damage to roads and bridges.
The disaster struck northern and central Nepal on August 26 after an apparent collapse or avalanche involving ice and rocks near the Nepal-Tibet border. Several villages and towns were inundated, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Rescue teams are continuing to search for survivors and missing people despite challenging weather and difficult terrain. Authorities are also working to restore access to areas cut off by the floods.
