Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for eight districts in Kerala following extremely heavy rainfall across the state.
The Red Alert has been declared for Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while the remaining districts are under an Orange Alert.
In view of the severe weather, district collectors have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, and Alappuzha.
The intense rainfall has also triggered landslides in Idukki and Kottayam. At Adoormala in Kudayathoor, Idukki, a landslide caused water to enter several houses.
Meanwhile, Kottayam is witnessing flood-like conditions, with water levels rising rapidly. The Manimala and Meenachil rivers have overflowed their banks, causing widespread concern in low-lying areas.
