Kerala Welcomes Karkidakam with Ramayana Recitals and Traditional Rituals

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala today marks the beginning of Karkidakam, the last month of the Malayalam calendar, with the traditional commencement of Ramayana recitals in homes and temples across the state.

For the next one month, temples and households will resonate with the chanting of the Ramayana, a centuries-old practice observed during Karkidakam. The arrival of the month also coincides with monsoon rains, adding to its spiritual atmosphere.

Historically known as the “month of scarcity,” Karkidakam was a difficult period for people in Kerala due to incessant rains, food shortages, and seasonal illnesses. During those challenging times, many turned to the recitation of the Ramayana for spiritual strength and solace.

The month begins as the Sun enters the Cancer (Karkidakam) zodiac sign. On the eve of Karkidaka Sankranti, many households cleaned their homes and surroundings, performed traditional purification rituals, and lit the nilavilakku (traditional lamp) to welcome prosperity and well-being.

A distinctive tradition of Karkidakam is the wearing of the Dashapushpam (ten sacred medicinal flowers) and the daily reading of the Ramayana. Many families also follow Ayurvedic dietary practices during the month, including consuming Karkidaka Kanji (a medicinal herbal porridge) and preparing traditional leafy dishes, believing they help improve health and immunity during the monsoon season.
