Victoria: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Sunday conferred with the prestigious Presidential Distinction, ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon,’ by Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie in recognition of his leadership in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The award, presented at a special ceremony, honours Modi’s contributions to promoting the Blue Economy, climate action, sustainable management of ocean resources, and advancing the interests of developing countries, particularly Small Island Developing States. It is the first time the distinction has been awarded.
Accepting the honour, Modi expressed gratitude to the people and Government of Seychelles and dedicated the award to all nations committed to protecting the environment and combating climate change. He said addressing climate change is a shared global responsibility and called for collective efforts to build a greener and more sustainable future.
The Prime Minister highlighted India’s commitment to environmental protection through initiatives such as Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and the International Big Cat Alliance.
Modi said the recognition, which comes as India and Seychelles celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, reflects the deepening partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to sustainable development.
The award also underscores Seychelles’ recognition of India’s growing role as a trusted partner in capacity building, environmental conservation, and advancing sustainable development priorities across the Indian Ocean region.
