Orange Alert in Thrissur: District Administration Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

Thrissur: In view of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of extremely heavy rainfall in Thrissur district on June 3, 4, and 5, 2026, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has intensified emergency preparedness and precautionary measures. District Collector and DDMA Chairperson announced that an Orange Alert has been declared for the district.

Authorities stated that all departments have been directed to complete necessary preparedness activities and strengthen precautionary measures in accordance with the Monsoon Disaster Response Guidelines (Orange Book 2025) issued by the State Disaster Management Authority.

The district administration has urged the public to exercise extreme caution as intense rainfall may increase the risk of landslides, mudslides, flash floods, waterlogging in urban and low-lying areas, and hazards along riverbanks and coastal regions.

Special Vigil in High-Risk Areas

Residents living in hilly regions, riverbanks, paddy fields, landslide-prone zones, and areas identified by expert committees as disaster-prone may be shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure if necessary. Instructions have also been issued to Tahsildars and management authorities to ensure the safety of residents in labour camps, temporary shelters, and other accommodation facilities.

Emergency Steps to Prevent Waterlogging

Local bodies, the Public Works Department, National Highway authorities, and other concerned departments have been instructed to implement emergency action plans to clear drainage blockages and prevent rainwater accumulation in urban and low-lying areas. Immediate inspection of potholes, accident-prone locations, and safety measures at construction sites has also been ordered.

Tree, Hoarding and Electrical Safety Inspections

With strong winds expected alongside heavy rain, departments have been directed to take preventive measures against accidents caused by dangerous trees, branches, hoardings, and advertisement boards. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has been instructed to urgently complete safety inspections of electric posts, transformers, and power lines. KSEB control rooms will remain operational round-the-clock.

Caution for Night Travel and Hill Roads

The district administration warned that traffic restrictions may become necessary on certain hill roads due to heavy rain and the increased risk of landslides, particularly during nighttime. If such measures are required, departments will coordinate and inform the public in advance.

24×7 Control Rooms and Rescue Systems Activated

Authorities have directed that control rooms of various departments, including Taluk-level centres, remain functional 24 hours a day with adequate staffing. Rescue and disaster response systems have also been kept on high alert.

The District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) can be contacted through the following numbers:

  • Toll-Free: 1077
  • Landline: 0487 2362424, 0487 2361590
  • Mobile: 9447074424, 7907483916

Taluk Emergency Operations Centres (TEOC) are also operational across the district.

Monitoring of Dams and Rivers Intensified

The administration stated that water levels in rivers, dams, and regulators will be closely monitored. Relevant departments have been instructed to assess situations in advance and take controlled measures during daytime if water levels rise. KSEB and the Irrigation Department will regularly monitor dam storage and discharge and relay updates to the district control room.

Safety Measures for Tourists

Departments concerned have been directed to ensure warning systems at tourist destinations and widely publicise emergency contact numbers to visitors.

Public Advisory

The district administration advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, remain highly cautious near rivers, canals, waterlogged areas, and hilly regions, and immediately report fallen electric lines or dangerous trees to authorities. The District Collector urged the public to rely only on official warnings issued by the administration and weather department and refrain from spreading rumours.
