Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rainfall that began on Saturday has caused widespread devastation across Kerala, claiming eight lives in rain-related incidents and disrupting normal life in several districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 12 districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday. Only Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam have been excluded from the red alert.
Torrential rains have inundated major towns and low-lying areas across the state, while several locations have reported landslides and mudslides. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and move to relief camps or other safe locations if instructed by district administrations.
As a precautionary measure, several dams have been opened after water levels rose sharply. People have been advised to stay away from rivers, streams, and waterlogged areas due to the risk of flash floods. Fishing has also been banned in coastal regions experiencing rough sea conditions.
In Wayanad, schools and colleges functioning as relief camps will remain closed until further notice. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as heavy rain is expected to persist.
