The administration of the Itanagar Capital Region banned the commercial slaughter of mithuns and warned of strict action against violators.
The ban order was issued by Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu under provisions of the Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1989, and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
Toko Babu, who also serves as the chairperson of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), stated that a fine of ₹20,000 would be imposed for any illegal slaughter of mithuns.
The mithun, a semi-domesticated bovine species, holds significant cultural and economic importance in several northeastern states, especially in Arunachal Pradesh. Authorities said the decision was aimed at regulating slaughter activities and protecting the animal population in the region.
