Govt steps up LPG supply, ramps up sale of 5-kg cylinders amid Hormuz concerns

New Delhi: The Centre has intensified efforts to ensure adequate cooking gas supply, stepping up the sale of smaller LPG cylinders amid concerns linked to the Strait of Hormuz situation.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, around 6.6 lakh 5-kg LPG cylinders have been sold across the country since March 23 to meet rising demand. Officials said that more than 90,000 such cylinders, also known as Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders, were sold on April 4 alone.

Unlike the subsidised 14.2-kg domestic cylinders, the 5-kg cylinders are available at market rates and can be purchased over the counter at LPG distributorships by showing valid identity proof, without the need for address verification.

The move is aimed at ensuring easy access to cooking fuel and preventing any supply disruptions, as the government continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to remain calm.
