Centre Sends 440 Tonnes of Onions to Tripura to Stabilise Prices

New Delhi: The Centre has launched its first-ever Kanda Express service to Agartala, Tripura, transporting around 440 tonnes of buffer onions to improve availability and keep prices affordable ahead of the festive season.

The consignment is expected to reach Agartala by October 18 and will help supply onions to seven of Tripura’s eight districts.

The Department of Consumer Affairs said fresh kharif arrivals had helped moderate onion prices, with the all-India average mandi price declining from around ₹3,600 per quintal in September to ₹3,300 in October.

Retail onion prices have fallen by ₹1–₹13 per kg in 211 cities over the past two weeks. The government will continue releasing buffer stocks based on market conditions to ensure adequate supply and control price fluctuations.
