A controversy has erupted in poll-bound Kerala after an alleged communal remark by BJP candidate B Gopalakrishnan in the Guruvayur constituency triggered political and legal action.
The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the opposition Indian National Congress have approached the Election Commission seeking action against the BJP leader. They allege that his statement, made in a campaign video, carries communal overtones and violates election norms.
The row centres on a video in which Gopalakrishnan reportedly claimed that Guruvayur constituency has not elected a Hindu MLA for nearly five decades. He also alleged that both the LDF and the UDF have not been fielding candidates from the Hindu community.
Opposition parties have strongly criticised the remarks, arguing that such statements could disturb communal harmony in the state, especially during an election period. The Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), the student wing affiliated with the Congress, has also taken legal steps in the matter. The organisation has filed a petition before the High Court and lodged a police complaint, demanding strict action against the BJP candidate.
With multiple complaints now before constitutional and legal authorities, the focus has shifted to the Election Commission’s response and whether further action will be initiated.
