US Sinks Iranian Minelayer Ships Near Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

Tensions in the Gulf region escalated on Tuesday after the United States said it had sunk several Iranian vessels near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. According to the United States Central Command, American forces destroyed multiple Iranian ships, including 16 minelayer vessels, amid reports that Tehran was attempting to place naval mines in the busy waterway.

The announcement came shortly after Donald Trump warned Iran against mining the strait, which is crucial for global oil transportation. In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump demanded the immediate removal of any mines placed in the area.

“If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before,” Trump wrote, adding that removing the mines would be “a giant step in the right direction.”

Later, Trump claimed that 10 inactive Iranian minelaying ships had already been sunk by U.S. forces and warned that more military action could follow.

A report by CNN indicated that Iran had begun laying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, though on a limited scale so far. Sources cited in the report said only “a few dozen” mines had been deployed in recent days.

Despite the losses, Iran is believed to retain more than 80% of its fleet of small boats and minelayers, meaning it could still lay hundreds of additional mines if tensions continue to rise.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for energy supplies. In 2025, around 13 million barrels of crude oil per day passed through the strait—about 31% of global seaborne crude shipments—according to energy consultancy Kpler.

The situation has raised concerns about possible disruptions to global energy markets if tensions escalate further in the region.
