Riyadh: A potentially devastating drone strike on a key facility of Saudi Aramco was successfully thwarted after Saudi defense forces intercepted and destroyed two drones mid-air before they could hit the Ras Tanura oil refinery near Dammam. The refinery has been temporarily shut down as a precautionary step following the incident.
Authorities confirmed that the attempted attack caused a brief fire, visuals of which surfaced online, but no casualties were reported. The Ras Tanura plant is one of the Kingdom’s most strategic energy hubs, with the capacity to refine more than 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day, making it vital to global oil markets.
Security has been significantly tightened in the aftermath, with officials assuring that the situation is fully under control. While there is no immediate confirmation on disruptions to oil production or exports, the incident has raised fresh concerns over regional security and the safety of critical energy infrastructure.
