Vande Mataram Guidelines Revised: No Compulsion to Stand in Cinema Halls

New Delhi: The Union government has released updated guidelines on the observance of Vande Mataram, India’s national song, bringing clarity to public conduct during its rendition. While standing as a mark of respect remains mandatory at official events and in educational institutions, the government has made it clear that audiences in cinema theatres are not required to stand when Vande Mataram is played.

Issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the guidelines aim to align the protocol for Vande Mataram with that of the national anthem Jana Gana Mana, while also respecting the nature of public spaces. Since cinema halls are primarily venues for entertainment, the exemption has been granted if the song is played before or after film screenings. The move comes amid ongoing legal petitions seeking national anthem–level status for Vande Mataram, with the Centre also examining possible legal and policy changes related to the national song.
