Meghalaya Illegal Coal Mine Blast Kills 18, High Court Steps In with Suo Motu Action

Shillong: A devastating explosion at an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya has claimed at least 18 lives, prompting swift judicial intervention. The tragedy struck early Thursday morning in the Thangsku area of East Jaintia Hills district. Authorities said the exact number of workers inside the mine at the time of the blast remains unknown, raising fears that the death toll could increase. Rescue teams continue search operations for those trapped, while the injured are receiving treatment at hospitals in Shillong. A detailed probe has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the explosion.

Taking serious note of the incident, the Meghalaya High Court initiated suo motu proceedings and directed immediate action against those responsible for the illegal mining. A division bench comprising Justices H.S. Thangkhiew and W. Diengdoh ordered the arrest of mine owners and operators involved in the prohibited activity. The District Police Superintendent and the Deputy Commissioner have been asked to appear before the court on February 9 with a status report. Reports indicate the mine was operating using the banned “rat-hole” mining method, prohibited by the National Green Tribunal and upheld by the Supreme Court due to grave environmental and safety concerns.
