Kerala Still Heating Up: Climate Report Flags Persistent Warming Despite Cooler 2025

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala continues to face a long-term warming trend, even though 2025 offered slight relief from extreme heat, according to the Statement on Climate for the State of Kerala: 2025. The report says temperatures across the state remained above normal, highlighting that climate change impacts are far from easing.

The year 2024 was confirmed as the warmest on record in Kerala since temperature observations began in 1901. While 2025 was notably cooler in comparison, scientists stress that the drop does not indicate a reversal of the warming pattern, but only a temporary moderation.

Climate experts warn that the sustained rise in temperatures reflects the deepening influence of global climate change, compounded by regional factors such as altered monsoon behaviour, urban expansion, and land-use changes.

The report raises concerns over the growing risks posed by higher temperatures, including heat-related health issues, stress on agriculture, water scarcity, and ecological imbalance. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent, Kerala’s climate vulnerability is expected to intensify.

Researchers and policymakers have called for urgent climate action, urging stronger adaptation strategies, ecosystem protection, and climate-resilient planning to safeguard the state against the escalating impacts of global warming.
