New Delhi: India is celebrating its 77th Republic Day today, with the grand Republic Day parade set to take place at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, showcasing the country’s military strength and cultural diversity.
The celebrations will begin around 9:30 am when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrive at the National War Memorial to lay wreaths in honour of fallen soldiers.
The chief guests at this year’s Republic Day are European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The parade will feature cultural performances from various states, including Kerala, with a total of 30 tableaux on display.
The main ceremony, starting at 10:30 am, will last for about 90 minutes. The parade will be led by Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area.
Marking the 150th anniversary of the national song “Vande Mataram”, this year’s Republic Day theme is centered on it. Rare visuals depicting the lyrics of “Vande Mataram” will be displayed along Kartavya Path.
Models of weapons used in Operation Sindoori will be showcased during the parade. For the first time, a model of the Army’s battle formation will also be part of the march. A military contingent from the European Union will participate in the Republic Day celebrations as well.
In view of the celebrations, tight security arrangements have been put in place across the country, including in Delhi. Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in large numbers to ensure safety and smooth conduct of the event.
