Actor and Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay is likely to be named as an accused in the Karur crowd tragedy case, according to reports. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to file its chargesheet by the second week of February, with the possibility of invoking charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Senior officials of the Tamil Nadu Police may also be named in the case.
Vijay has been summoned to the CBI headquarters in New Delhi for a second round of questioning. Sources indicate that the fresh interrogation is aimed at seeking clarification on certain responses given during the first round of questioning held on January 12, during which the agency reportedly posed nearly 90 questions to him.
In its submission to the CBI, the Tamil Nadu Police stated that the TVK had not informed authorities about the expected large turnout for the rally. According to the police, the presence of more than 30,000 people at the event led to the tragic crowd situation.
The investigation was transferred to the CBI following the intervention of the Supreme Court. Earlier, the CBI had clarified that Vijay was being questioned only in the capacity of a witness. However, the latest developments indicate that the actor-politician may now face serious legal consequences as the probe reaches its final stage.
