New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed Pongal as a global festival that resonates deeply with the Tamil community worldwide, celebrating the spirit of gratitude, hard work and harmony with nature. The Prime Minister was speaking while taking part in Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L. Murugan.
Highlighting the essence of the harvest festival, PM said Pongal honours the relentless efforts of farmers and expresses thankfulness to the land that yields crops and the Sun God who sustains life. PM noted that the festival reflects India’s age-old cultural values of respecting nature and recognising the dignity of labour.
“Though Pongal has its roots in Tamil Nadu, it has become a global celebration wherever Tamils live. It carries a powerful message of unity, environmental consciousness and respect for those who feed the nation,” the Prime Minister said.
PM also praised the farming community for its invaluable contribution to the country’s progress, adding that India’s traditional festivals serve as reminders of sustainable living and ecological balance.
The celebration at Minister L. Murugan’s residence was marked by traditional Pongal rituals and cultural practices, with several dignitaries joining the Prime Minister in observing the festive spirit.
