Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set for a major political mobilisation today as the Left Democratic Front (LDF) stages a powerful satyagraha under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, protesting what it calls the Union government’s financial blockade and continued neglect of the state.
The day-long protest will be held from 10 am to 5 pm in front of the Palayam Martyrs’ Memorial, with ministers, MLAs, MPs, elected representatives, and senior LDF leaders participating in large numbers. Mass organisations affiliated with the Left are also expected to march to the venue in solidarity.
The satyagraha will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister and is described as a continuation of the high-profile protest he led in New Delhi in 2024, which drew national attention to Kerala’s financial concerns.
Calling the agitation a decisive step, Pinarayi Vijayan said the protest opens a new front of resistance against policies that, he alleged, are pushing Kerala’s development backwards. CM asserted that people across the state would unite with their representatives to oppose the Centre’s financial constraints.
“The LDF government remains committed to creating conditions for everyone to live with dignity and satisfaction,” the Chief Minister said, underlining the government’s resolve to safeguard welfare and development initiatives.
In a Facebook post, Vijayan accused the Centre of imposing financial restrictions to choke the state’s governance and derail its development momentum, triggering widespread public anger. CM said the move was aimed at weakening the popular support enjoyed by the LDF government.
The Chief Minister also made it clear that Kerala would firmly resist any attempt to disrupt key welfare measures, including women’s safety programmes, ‘Connect to Work’ scholarships, and the distribution of social security pensions, signalling that the state is prepared for a prolonged political battle.
