Kerala Freezes Revised K-TET Norms Amid Teacher Protests, Plans Review Plea in Supreme Court

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has put on hold the revised norms for the Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (K-TET) following widespread protests by teacher organisations. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Monday said the government order issued on January 1, 2026, will remain suspended until further directions are issued.

The revised norms, which triggered strong opposition from teachers and aspirants, were alleged to adversely affect the eligibility and career prospects of thousands of candidates. Protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of the changes, arguing that they were introduced without adequate consultation and would create uncertainty in recruitment and promotions.

Addressing the issue, Minister Sivankutty said the government has taken note of the concerns raised by stakeholders and decided to temporarily freeze the implementation of the new rules. Minister also announced that the state government plans to file a review petition in the Supreme Court, seeking reconsideration of the verdict that led to the revised K-TET norms.

“The government is committed to protecting the interests of teachers and students. Until clarity is obtained through legal and administrative measures, the revised order will not be enforced,” the minister said.

Teacher unions welcomed the government’s decision to suspend the norms but said protests would continue until the issue is permanently resolved. The development comes amid ongoing demonstrations across the state by teachers demanding policy stability and fair eligibility criteria.
