In a major step to curb worsening air pollution, petrol pumps across Delhi have stopped supplying fuel to vehicles that do not have a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, effective from today. Alongside this, old vehicles that violate age norms are no longer permitted to enter the national capital, as authorities tighten enforcement under the air-pollution control measures.
The new rule is being enforced through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras installed at fuel stations. These cameras instantly identify vehicles without valid PUC certificates or those exceeding the permissible age limit. Once detected, voice alert systems at petrol pumps notify staff and vehicle owners, and fuel supply is denied.
Delhi Police personnel and transport department officials have been deployed at petrol pumps to ensure strict compliance and prevent violations. Vehicles flagged by the system may also face penalties under existing environmental and motor vehicle laws.
Authorities said the move is part of emergency measures to combat Delhi’s persistent air quality crisis, especially during periods of high pollution. Officials have urged vehicle owners to renew their PUC certificates immediately and comply with vehicle-age regulations to avoid inconvenience.
The government has reiterated that such measures are necessary to protect public health and reduce vehicular emissions, which remain one of the largest contributors to Delhi’s air pollution.
