Tamil Nadu on High Alert as Torrential Rains Flood Chennai and Tiruvallur

Tamil Nadu is reeling under the impact of relentless, heavy rainfall as a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal triggers widespread flooding across major districts. Chennai and Tiruvallur have been placed under a Red Alert, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of very heavy downpours until Tuesday morning.

As a precaution, all schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu will remain shut on Tuesday.

Residents of Chennai woke up to an unexpected weather onslaught on Monday, as the city was drenched by nearly eight hours of uninterrupted rain. Streets, residential areas, and low-lying zones were quickly submerged, disrupting traffic, transport, and normal life. Many citizens were caught off guard as water levels rose rapidly.

The intense rainfall is linked to the influence of Cyclone Ditwah, which continues to bring severe weather to various parts of Tamil Nadu. A Yellow Alert has been issued for four districts, and disaster response teams have mobilized boats in southern Chennai to support rescue operations in hard-hit areas.

For the second straight day, heavy showers have lashed several districts including Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, and Ranipet. In Thangachimadam, flooding has left certain residential pockets isolated.

Meteorologists expect the rainfall intensity to gradually decrease within the next 24 hours, offering hope of relief as the depression weakens.
