Supreme Court to Examine Pleas Today Seeking Stay on Kerala’s SIR Proceedings

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to hear a series of petitions today challenging the ongoing Social Impact Review (SIR) proceedings in Kerala. The state government, along with major political parties including the CPI(M), CPI, Congress, and the Indian Union Muslim League, has urged the court to temporarily suspend the SIR process.

With local body elections underway in the state, both the Muslim League and the CPI(M) argued that allowing the SIR to continue could disrupt the election process. The state government echoed this concern, stressing that parallel conduct of the SIR and elections could cripple administrative functioning and trigger a governance crisis. The petition was filed by the Chief Secretary, representing the government.

The Chief Secretary’s plea warns that simultaneous execution of the SIR and local elections may paralyze the administrative machinery, making it difficult for officials to manage both responsibilities effectively.

Chief Justice B.R. Gavai noted that the court will hold detailed hearings on the matter and consider all related petitions on Friday. Meanwhile, petitions challenging the SIR process in Bihar are currently before a bench led by Justice Surya Kant.
