Kerala High Court Unveils Malayalam Legal Glossary to Make Justice More Accessible

The Kerala High Court has launched a Malayalam Legal Glossary featuring over 6,300 legal terms translated into the state’s native language. The initiative aims to bring greater clarity, accuracy, and consistency to the use of legal terminology in Malayalam, helping both legal professionals and the general public.

The newly released glossary provides Malayalam equivalents for a wide range of English and foreign legal expressions, making complex legal concepts easier to grasp. By standardizing legal vocabulary, the High Court hopes to enhance communication between courts, lawyers, and citizens—particularly those more comfortable with the regional language.

Legal experts and observers have hailed the initiative as a milestone in promoting linguistic inclusivity in the judiciary. They noted that it would not only simplify court proceedings but also encourage wider use of Malayalam in legal documentation and discourse.

The move follows the Kerala High Court’s earlier effort to publish judgments in Malayalam, reflecting its growing emphasis on making justice accessible, transparent, and people-centric. The glossary is expected to serve as an invaluable reference for advocates, law students, and government departments across the state.
