Chennai: One of the survivors of the tragic speedboat accident off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island has recounted the terrifying moments when the vessel capsized within minutes during what was supposed to be a routine island-hopping trip.
Nirmal Kumar, who arrived in Chennai on Sunday night (July 13) after receiving medical treatment in Vietnam, said the speedboat overturned in just three minutes, leaving passengers with little time to react.
The accident occurred on July 11 near Hon May Rut Ngoai, off Phu Quoc Island, when a speedboat carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members capsized during the excursion.
The tragedy claimed the lives of 15 Indian tourists. Sixteen others were rescued and have since returned to India after undergoing treatment. One survivor remains in critical condition at a hospital in Phu Quoc.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the accident. The incident has raised concerns over safety measures for tourist boat operations in the popular Vietnamese island destination.
