Yoga Has Become Truly Universal from Its Ancient Indian Roots: UN Chief Guterres

United Nations: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday said that yoga, which originated in ancient India, has evolved into a truly universal practice that benefits millions of people across different faiths and cultures around the world.

Speaking on the occasion of the 12th International Day of Yoga, Guterres noted that yoga’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to promote physical, mental and emotional well-being.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations organised the celebrations at the UN headquarters under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”

The event was held on the North Lawns of the UN headquarters near the iconic Mahatma Gandhi statue, where vibrant yoga mats were laid out for participants.

Yoga practitioners, diplomats, UN officials, members of the diplomatic corps and the Indian-American community joined the celebrations, highlighting the growing global acceptance of yoga as a tool for health, wellness and harmony.

The event underscored yoga’s transformation from an ancient Indian tradition into a worldwide movement promoting holistic well-being and healthy living.
