The Trinamool Congress has approached the Supreme Court of India challenging the Election Commission’s decision to appoint central government and public sector employees as supervisors and assistants for the vote counting scheduled on May 4.
The matter is set to be heard on Saturday by a special bench comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi.
The move comes in the backdrop of violence reported during the second phase of polling in West Bengal. The TMC alleged that such a provision is not part of the Election Commission’s standard guidelines and claimed that the new arrangement has been introduced only in West Bengal.
