Kolkata: Tensions escalated in Mukundapur on Kolkata’s south-eastern outskirts after supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed over control of a local party office, leaving several people injured.
According to police, the confrontation took place on Tuesday when members of the two groups disputed control of the office. The situation reportedly turned violent, prompting police personnel to use a baton charge to disperse the gathering and restore order.
The TMC alleged that several of its workers and leaders were assaulted during the incident and also claimed that some women party workers were molested. The BJP rejected the allegations, describing them as baseless.
Several TMC workers were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment following the clash.
Police are examining the circumstances that led to the confrontation and are monitoring the area to prevent further tensions.
