Supreme Court to Hear Kerala’s Challenge Against Voter Roll Revision Tomorrow

New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to take up Kerala’s crucial petitions on Tuesday, challenging the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s voter list. A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant will examine the plea seeking an urgent stay on the SIR process.

In its petition, the Kerala government argues that continuing the SIR while local body elections are approaching could cripple the state’s administrative machinery. The Chief Secretary, in an affidavit, warns that simultaneously conducting the voter roll revision and the local polls may trigger a serious governance crisis.

Amid this legal tussle, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has already extended the SIR schedule by a week. The deadline for distributing and uploading enumeration forms has been shifted from December 4 to December 11, while the release of the draft electoral rolls has been rescheduled from December 9 to December 16.

The Supreme Court’s decision tomorrow is expected to significantly influence how the voter list revision proceeds in the state.
