The general discussion on the state budget presented by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will begin in the Legislative Assembly today. The Opposition is expected to raise issues related to the government’s private investment policy and the tax concessions announced for low-alcohol beverages.
The Opposition is also likely to move an adjournment motion in the Assembly, alleging that the government has failed to effectively control the spread of infectious diseases in the state.
Meanwhile, discussions and criticism are emerging both within the UDF and outside the party over the government’s move to encourage low-alcohol beverages. Reports suggest that the Excise Minister was not informed about the tax structure proposed in the budget for such drinks. The concept of promoting beverages with lower alcohol content had reportedly been rejected by the previous government.
