Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Advocate Beilin Das has been arrested by Thumba Police for allegedly assaulting a junior female lawyer, Shyamili, within the premises of the Vanchiyoor court. He was apprehended from Station Kadavu while traveling in a car, just as he was attempting to secure anticipatory bail.
The alleged assault took place on Tuesday at an office in the Maharani Building near the court. Following a formal complaint by the victim, police registered a case under non-bailable sections.
Shyamili further alleged that a group of lawyers tried to block the police from arresting Das, with a lawyer’s association secretary reportedly insisting that the arrest should not take place inside the office.
The victim, who sustained serious injuries, is currently undergoing treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Kerala Industries Minister P. Rajeev visited her residence, assuring swift action and the immediate arrest of the accused.
In a decisive move, the Kerala Bar Council has suspended Beilin Das from legal practice until disciplinary proceedings are complete. If found guilty, he may face a permanent disbarment. The council has also served a show-cause notice to Das as part of suo motu disciplinary action.
