Rajasthan Launches ‘Project Caracal’ to Protect Rare Wild Cat

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Forest Department on Wednesday launched ‘Project Caracal’ at the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve to strengthen conservation efforts for the rare and elusive wild cat species.

The initiative was unveiled during a ‘Caracal Conservation Workshop’ attended by senior officials, wildlife experts, researchers and representatives from conservation organisations.

The project aims to protect the Caracal, which was once widely found across Rajasthan’s arid and semi-arid regions but has seen a sharp decline in population. Experts attribute the decline to habitat loss, fragmentation and a reduced prey base.

Officials said the programme will focus on habitat restoration, scientific monitoring and awareness initiatives to revive the population of the species in the state.
