New Delhi: The Press Club of India on Sunday condemned the alleged treatment of journalists by Delhi Police while they were covering protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar and sought immediate action on complaints of sexual harassment against police personnel.
The statement came a day after three women journalists alleged that they were sexually harassed by police personnel while covering the protest on Saturday.
Delhi Police said it had received the complaints and transferred them to the Crime Branch for a “fair and impartial enquiry”.
“The Press Club of India is shocked and dismayed at the Delhi Police’s actions against and treatment of journalists during the protests at Jantar Mantar against the chief election commissioner on Friday and Saturday,” the journalists’ body said in a statement.
The Press Club also urged the authorities to take appropriate action on the complaints and ensure the safety of journalists while they are carrying out their professional duties.
