PM Modi Visits UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Complex in Indonesia

Yogyakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on Wednesday, accompanied by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

During the visit, the two leaders unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the commencement of the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) conservation and restoration project at the historic temple complex.

Constructed in the 9th century, the Prambanan Temple Complex is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex and is dedicated to the Trimurti—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. The monument is regarded as a lasting symbol of the deep civilizational and cultural ties shared by India and Indonesia.

The restoration initiative follows an understanding reached during President Prabowo Subianto’s State Visit to India in 2025, when both countries agreed to explore India’s assistance in conserving the temples at the Prambanan complex.

India has a strong record of restoring and preserving heritage sites across Southeast Asia. The Archaeological Survey of India has previously carried out extensive documentation of Indonesia’s Borobudur Temple Compounds. The Prambanan conservation project further reflects India’s continued commitment to protecting and preserving shared cultural and civilizational heritage.
