Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the tragic incident in Karwar district in which several people drowned after being swept away by strong river currents.
According to police sources, eight members of a family, including seven women, lost their lives while two others remain missing in the incident that occurred in the Tatte Hakkalu river near Shirali village in Bhatkal taluk.
The victims were reportedly collecting freshwater mussels as part of a seasonal livelihood activity when they were caught in strong currents after entering deeper waters.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for those injured in the mishap
