Kathmandu: Nepal has constituted a seven-member expert panel to investigate the cause of the devastating flash floods that struck the country last month, killing more than 1,400 people and leaving over 6,000 missing, officials said on Saturday.
The panel will investigate the factors that triggered the disaster and examine whether climate change may have contributed to the severity of the floods.
The flash floods, which originated near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, caused widespread destruction across parts of northern and central Nepal. The Bhotekoshi River, flowing south from the Himalayan border region, carried the floodwaters downstream, inundating settlements and sweeping away houses, vehicles, roads and bridges.
Several hydropower projects were also damaged in the disaster, causing significant infrastructure losses in the affected areas.
