Name Mismatch Between Aadhaar and Ration Card Threatens to Disqualify Lakhs of Kerala Beneficiaries

Kerala is currently facing a major administrative challenge as millions of beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS) stand to lose their access to essential food supplies due to mismatches in names between their Aadhaar and ration cards. The state’s mustering process, meant to streamline beneficiary data by linking Aadhaar with ration cards, has exposed discrepancies in names caused by spelling errors and differences in transliteration from Malayalam to English.

This mismatch is particularly problematic for rural residents, where such inconsistencies are more common. If not resolved, it could result in the invalidation of ration cards, leaving a significant portion of Kerala’s population without access to vital commodities such as rice, wheat, and other essential items.

State officials are urging beneficiaries to correct these name discrepancies through government websites or by visiting local ration offices to avoid disqualification. The Kerala government is also rolling out support measures to assist vulnerable groups in resolving the issue. The situation underscores a broader issue of identity document mismatches impacting access to welfare schemes across India.

If unresolved, thousands of families in Kerala could face severe disruptions to their food supplies, highlighting the need for swift action.
