Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is facing a power crisis due to below-normal rainfall this year, State Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph said on Tuesday.
The minister said the power shortage is not limited to Kerala, but is being experienced across the country. He added that the government is making efforts to procure electricity despite the high market prices.
“Rainfall this year has been lower than last year, and this has led to the current power crisis,” Sunny Joseph said.
He also revealed that power restrictions had to be imposed for four to five days. The decision on whether such restrictions will continue will depend on prevailing weather conditions and rainfall, he added.
The minister said he would make a detailed statement on the issue in the State Assembly on Wednesday under Rule 300, outlining the government’s response to the power shortage.
