Kerala’s Veteran Leader V.S. Achuthanandan in Critical Condition; Medical Board to Review Health Today

Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala Chief Minister and senior CPM stalwart V.S. Achuthanandan remains in an extremely critical condition, with doctors reporting significant deterioration in vital organ functions. A medical board constituted by the government has stated that his internal organs are not responding adequately, raising serious concerns about his recovery.

Achuthanandan’s blood pressure and kidney functions remain unstable. On the advice of the expert panel, dialysis has been initiated. A fresh medical board meeting is scheduled for this morning to closely monitor and evaluate his current health status.

The 100-year-old leader was admitted to SUT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram last Monday following a heart attack. Since his admission, he has been under intensive care and remains on ventilator support.

V.S. Achuthanandan is a towering figure in Kerala’s political landscape — a founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the state. He served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, and held the position of Leader of the Opposition on three separate occasions — 1992–1996, 2001–2006, and 2011–2016. He also served as CPM’s state secretary three times, making significant contributions to Kerala’s political and social development.

As the state awaits further updates, leaders across party lines and well-wishers are expressing deep concern for the veteran leader’s health.
