Kerala’s AI Traffic Cameras Detect 9.8 Million Violations, ₹631 Crore Fines Issued

Kerala’s AI-driven traffic monitoring system has identified an astonishing 9.8 million traffic violations since its rollout in June 2023, as per the latest data from the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD). Over this period, ₹631 crore in fines were issued, with ₹400 crore collected so far.

In the 2024-25 financial year, e-challans worth ₹273 crore were generated for traffic violations, but only ₹150 crore has been recovered. Transport Commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam emphasized that AI cameras have significantly improved traffic law compliance and heightened public awareness of road safety.

Top Traffic Violations Identified:

  • Riding without a helmet (most common offense)
  • Driving without a seatbelt
  • Triple riding on two-wheelers

To strengthen enforcement, the Kerala government plans to increase AI camera installations by 10%, adding surveillance points on NH-66 and other major highways. Officials believe this initiative will further enhance road safety and encourage stricter adherence to traffic rules.
