Kerala VC Bans Admissions for Students in Criminal Cases; SFI Protests Strongly

Kerala University Vice Chancellor Dr. Mohan Kunnummal has directed colleges not to grant admission to students facing criminal cases. According to the new circular, every applicant must file an affidavit affirming they have no involvement in criminal cases or misconduct.

The affidavit asks four key questions—whether the student has been debarred from any college, is an accused in a criminal case, has been convicted of crimes against women or other offenses, or has engaged in exam malpractices. Any false declaration could lead to strict action, with college councils empowered to decide on violations.

The decision has stirred controversy, with student groups strongly opposing it. SFI state secretary P.S. Sanjiv slammed the directive as a “reactionary order,” warning of widespread protests. In a fiery Facebook post, SFI declared such “regressive measures will be thrown into the dustbin of history.”
