Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar has proposed a fine for pedestrians caught using mobile phones while crossing roads, citing it as a major cause of accidents. The minister believes that enforcing such a rule will enhance road safety and reduce mishaps caused by distracted walking.
Addressing the state assembly, Ganesh Kumar pointed out that many pedestrians are often engrossed in their phones while crossing roads, oblivious to approaching vehicles. This negligence, he said, puts both pedestrians and motorists at risk, leading to avoidable accidents.
Currently, traffic penalties are imposed only on vehicle users for rule violations. The minister stressed the need to extend accountability to pedestrians as well. “Fining those who cross roads while using mobile phones will instill discipline and significantly improve road safety,” he remarked.
Ganesh Kumar has called upon the police department to take necessary action and urged for legal amendments to enforce this rule effectively. His proposal has ignited discussions on pedestrian responsibility and road safety measures in Kerala.
