In a rare occurrence, Munnar recorded sub-zero temperatures for the first time this season, with Sevenmalai touching –1°C. Wayanad district also witnessed a significant dip, with temperatures falling below 10°C, marking the coldest reading of the season there. The chill intensified in Palakkad, Kasaragod and Pathanamthitta, where minimum temperatures dropped below 15°C for the first time this winter.
Across the rest of the state, early morning temperatures hovered between 15°C and 18°C, bringing unusually cold conditions to regions unaccustomed to such lows.
According to official data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Punalur recorded a minimum temperature of 16°C, which is 5.5°C below normal, while Kottayam saw the mercury dip to 17.8°C, 4.2°C lower than the seasonal average.
The sudden drop in temperature has led to chilly mornings and nights across Kerala, with hill stations and high-range areas experiencing especially severe cold, making this one of the most notable cold spells of the season.
