Kerala on UV Alert: Four Regions Record High Index, Orange Warning Issued

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing a surge in ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, with four regions recording a high UV Index of 8 over the past 24 hours. Kottarakkara, Konni, Changanassery, and Munnar have been placed under an Orange Alert, signaling a significant health risk due to intense sun exposure.

Weather authorities state that a UV Index between 8 and 10 falls in the high-risk category, warranting strict precautions. Meanwhile, Chengannur, Kalamassery, Ollur, Thrithala, Ponnani, Beypore, and Mananthavady have reported UV levels between 6 and 7, leading to a Yellow Alert in these areas.

The State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned that prolonged exposure to strong ultraviolet rays can result in sunburn, skin ailments, eye disorders, and other health complications. The UV Index typically peaks between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and residents are advised to minimize direct exposure during these hours.

Outdoor workers, fishermen, water transport operators, bikers, tourists, cancer patients, and individuals with skin, eye, or immune-related conditions are urged to exercise extra care. Authorities recommend protective measures such as wearing hats, sunglasses, and full-coverage cotton clothing, using umbrellas, and taking breaks in shaded areas.

Experts also warn that high-altitude and tropical regions are more prone to elevated UV levels. Even under clear, cloudless skies, UV radiation can remain dangerously high. Reflective surfaces like water bodies and sand can further intensify exposure, making precautionary steps essential for public safety.
