Kerala May Shift School Summer Break to Monsoon Months, Says Education Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty has proposed a bold change to the state’s academic calendar—replacing the traditional April–May summer vacation with a monsoon break in June–July. The proposal comes in response to rising concerns over extreme summer heat and frequent class disruptions due to heavy rains during reopening.

The minister emphasized that the move is still in its early stages and would be implemented only after extensive consultation with students, parents, teachers, and education experts. The government will also examine vacation models from other Indian states and countries before taking a final call.

Sivankutty urged the public to share feedback on the idea, especially regarding its impact on student well-being, academic continuity, and logistical feasibility for families. If approved, the revised schedule could reduce weather-related class interruptions and enhance learning flow—though it would require significant coordination in curriculum planning and exam scheduling.

The proposal has opened a larger discussion on how best to align the academic calendar with Kerala’s unique climate challenges, signaling the government’s willingness to rethink long-standing norms in the interest of student health and educational efficiency.
