Kerala Liquor Policy Hits Roadblock: Cabinet Defers Decision on Dry Day Removal

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Cabinet has delayed approval of the proposed new liquor policy, as ministers from various coalition parties demanded further deliberations on key aspects, including dry day removal, toddy shop classification, and distance norms.

Excise Minister M.B. Rajesh presented the policy draft, which proposes a star rating system for toddy shops to enhance the industry. However, ministers sought more clarity on reducing the minimum distance requirement between toddy shops before giving the green light.

The proposal to completely remove the monthly dry day on the first of every month also sparked debate. Additionally, ministers called for detailed discussions on allowing alcohol service at tourist destinations even on dry days.

With divided opinions within the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and concerns at the bureaucratic level, the policy is set for further internal discussions before being reintroduced in the Cabinet for final approval.
