Kerala High Court to Regulate Elephant Parades at Festivals, Stressing Animal Welfare

In a landmark decision, the Kerala High Court has announced plans to develop guidelines regulating the use of elephants in festivals and public events, underscoring the importance of humane treatment and welfare. During a hearing on the conditions faced by these animals, the Court noted, “If the Blue Whale lived on land, it would have met a fate similar to that of elephants,” drawing attention to the neglect and exploitation elephants often endure.

The upcoming guidelines aim to ensure that elephants used in festivals and parades are not exposed to stress, mistreatment, or insufficient care, while also addressing public safety and ethical concerns. These rules could bring significant changes to Kerala’s festivals, where elephants have traditionally played an iconic role, reshaping practices to prioritize the animals’ well-being and dignity.
