Kerala HC: No Coercive Action Against Wayanad Landslide Victims Over Loan Defaults Until Centre’s Decision

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the state government not to take any coercive action against victims of the Wayanad landslide who have defaulted on their loans, until the Central Government decides on a loan waiver.

The court issued the directive while hearing a plea from landslide-affected families who have been struggling with financial distress following the disaster. The petitioners argued that repayment of loans has become impossible due to loss of property and livelihood.

The High Court acknowledged their concerns and asked the state government to wait for the Centre’s decision on the loan waiver before proceeding with any recovery measures. The ruling comes as a relief to many families in Wayanad who have been facing pressure from banks and financial institutions.

The court has also sought a status report on the waiver proposal and urged the authorities to consider a humanitarian approach in addressing the financial hardships of the affected families.
