Kerala Creates History: Becomes India’s First State to Eradicate Extreme Poverty

Thiruvananthapuram: In a landmark moment for social progress, Kerala has etched its name in history as India’s first state to eliminate extreme poverty. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made the historic declaration in the State Legislative Assembly under Rule 300, marking a transformative milestone on Kerala Piravi Day.

As the state celebrates 69 years since its formation, this year’s Kerala Piravi has taken on greater significance — symbolizing not just the unity of the state, but the rise of a society free from extreme deprivation. Calling it one of the most important policy achievements in Kerala’s history, the Chief Minister said the announcement was made in the Assembly to “send a message of hope and progress to the people of Kerala and to the world.”

The formal public declaration will take place at 5 PM today at the Thiruvananthapuram Central Stadium, where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially announce the state’s remarkable achievement. The event will be attended by all state ministers, with Leader of the Opposition also invited. Film legends Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, and Mohanlal will grace the occasion as chief guests. The grand ceremony will feature vibrant cultural performances before and after the main event.

To oversee the celebrations, a high-level organizing committee chaired by Education Minister V. Sivankutty has been formed. Simultaneously, special programs and community events will be held across all local self-government institutions throughout Kerala, marking this as a day of pride and progress for the entire state.
