Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan laid the foundation stone for a large-scale township project on March 27, 2025, aimed at rehabilitating victims of the devastating Wayanad landslides from July 2024. The ceremony was held in Kalpetta, Wayanad district.
The ₹750 crore project will develop two sustainable townships: one spanning 58.5 hectares in the Nedumbala Estate, Kottapadi village, and the other covering 48.96 hectares in the Elstone Estate, Kalpetta village. These townships are designed to provide safe and secure housing for the displaced families.
The rehabilitation plan includes 1,000 square foot houses for each affected family. Among the 242 identified survivors, 175 have chosen to relocate to the township, while 67 opted for financial assistance of ₹15 lakh instead. The total number of beneficiaries currently stands at 402, covering different categories of affected individuals.
This initiative highlights the Kerala government’s commitment to restoring both homes and livelihoods, ensuring long-term safety and stability for the victims.
